In our minds, simply setting a goal can feel a lot like making progress towards a goal. Of course it’s not. So how do you break the loop of shame and make real progress towards your real estate goals?

The problem is the deadline. Deadlines are comfortably far – too far – in the future. We think we have plenty of time. But deadlines aren’t action. They’re merely an arbitrary line in the sand.

The trick to breaking the loop of shame is to dispense with the deadline and instead schedule time to work on the goal. Don’t say: “I’m going to list 100 properties by the end of the year.” Say: “Tomorrow between 10:00 and 12:00 I’m going to spend some time meeting people in my farming area.” Don’t say: “I want to make R1m this year selling real estate.” Say: “To make a million this year, I have to list at least 3 sellable properties each week. That mean I must prospect for listings each week day between 14:00 and 17:00.”

You reach goals through action, but to take action you must schedule time for the action. If you want to do something you’ve never done in the past, you have to start doing something you’re not currently doing, right?
